All trademarks are registered in a given country (or the EU) in one or more of the 45 international trademark classes that have been agreed on worldwide by the Nice Agreement.
Shown below is a summary of International Classes that most government trademark offices use as a starting point. (The big exception is Canada). Also, you may download or view the USPTO’s office PDF version of these classes. It is embodied in their Trademark of Examining Procedures.
If you are not sure what class your product belongs in, please consult your naming agency, lawyer or search thoroughly in the USPTO’s Manual of Goods and Services. Another good check is to see if your company has previously registered any products of a similar type. What classes did your lawyer use then and what descriptors? The trade mark attorneys will find all your previous registrations so they will know what classes and descriptions were previously approved by their agency. Alternative, find your biggest direct competitor and see how they registered their products. This will give you a starting point as to what class they thought the most important along with knowing it was approved. Many lawyers do this and simply tweak the descriptions.
