Background:
Like
many names in large companies, this name followed a natural evolution
of names. In fact, it was designed in part by engineers who had
been working on Sony's workstations that were called Network Engineering
Workstations or NEWS for short. When Nintendo did not choose to
include a CDRom drive from Sony in their new models, Sony saw
an opportunity to get into a high volume consumer game product.
Of course, today they have a major market share.
Fortunately,
this new name PlayStation
was also a new word in the English language and so was legally
clean worldwide. Not quite a perfect 10 because it is too descriptive
to go anywhere product and country wise in the future. And, as
for presentation, the 9 is very generous for such a plain logo,
but it earns it based on the power of being one of Sony's very
few brands that is allowed to be used without the associated corporate
name.
